Eve Lewis decides in middle school that something must be done about Megan Clark. On Eve's first encounter with Megan, she finds Megan to be kind, pretty, thoughtful, and funny, just the type of girl that Eve sees as a risk to her own popularity. Eve, who is competitive and self-absorbed, immediately feels threatened by Megan and allows her jealousy to grow into a dangerous hate that soon has Eve consumed with ruining Megan's life. She starts by recruiting two of Megan's good friends: Anna, Megan's best friend since first grade, and Brett, a boy who has loved Megan since the day he met her in elementary school. Over time Eve manipulates Anna and Brett, using their immaturity and fear to enlist them to her cause. Hunter joins the alliance by chance when he moves into town and befriends Brett.
